Central Okanagan East Liquid Waste Management Plan
We often don’t give much thought to what happens to the wastewater that flows from
our sinks and toilets into our sewers or septic fields. Yet, planning for the management
of these liquid wastes is the key to ensuring cost-effective and environmentally-friendly
solutions for current and future use.
After a
comprehensive
public process, the Regional District of Central Okanagan
developed a Liquid Waste
Management Plan (LWMP) for the Central Okanagan East Electoral Area (formerly
known as Joe Rich/Ellison). This plan provides future direction for managing liquid waste from sewers and septic systems
and preventing pollution over the next 20 years.

Final Reports
During 2009, the
Regional Board adopted
the
Final Reports making up the
Liquid Waste Management
Plan for Central
Okanagan East.
What is a Liquid Waste Management Plan
(LWMP)?
This is a plan that charts the future course of action for the management, collection,
treatment, and final disposal of sewage and other wastewaters in a given area.
It's developed through
extensive and
comprehensive public
involvement and helps protect human health and the environment,
while aiding in water
conservation, reducing the amount of wastewater to manage, and addressing storm water
issues.
The LWMP complements the Official Community Plan and
Joe Rich Rural Land Use Bylaw for
the Central Okanagan
East Electoral Area.
Comprehensive Public Participation
Public participation is mandatory to ensure the plan reflects the needs of the community,
now and for the future. This is especially important as the implementation of any
recommendations will be funded by those in the plan area.
To ensure that the interests of area residents are reflected in the plan, the Regional
District established an
Advisory Committee (AC)
made up of area
residents and technical
and government
representatives to
oversee and provide
input on the development
of the plan. The AC assisted opportunities for community feedback on any proposed
options, such as open houses, public meetings, and internet access to information.
